I lost my w810i and want something i can use its accessories with. I’m not picky about lots of features but would like a decent camera.

there is a w960i coming out soon. its awesome..

I was hoping to buy the Canon FS20, as it has a mic input and is a fairly good camera, however, nowhere seems to be in stock and it’s proving difficult to come by.

If someone can help me find a camera that meets my needs I will forever grateful!

It’s for my boyfriend, who plays in a band – he wants to record updates and also live shows. The sound quality does not need to be amazing, as these recordings will just be for the band, however, I think I should get a camera with at least the option of adding an external mic, in case he ever wants to. I’m struggling to find anything within my price range (up to approximately £300) with mic input, aside from the Canon mentioned above. An alternative is a Sony with an accessory shoe, as pearson do an accessory that allows you to connect a mic input. However, from what I can tell the lower end cameras do not have accessory shoes. Is it possible to buy an accessory shoe to attach to it?? I find it all quite confusing.

Also, I want flash or HDD memory, with a USB port. Most seem to have this. Anyone who can suggest a camera, or tell me where to find the canon fs20, would be amazing.

You are missing a requirement.

Manual audio gain control. The FS20 does not have it. With loud audio, there is no mic by itself that can record decently without manual audio gain control.

You also do NOT want to record to a hard disc drive. The loud audio can cause enough vibration to have the camcorder lock the drive heads and the result is a buffer memory error". The FS20 is flash memory which does not have the vibration problem.

I know it is more $, but the Canon miniDV tape based HV40 (if your computer has a firewire port to import the video) or the Sony HDR-HC9… Or, with Flash memory, the Canon HF or HF S series. All of these have a 1/8" (3.5mm) stereo mic jack and manual audio gain control.

Another option is to get whatever camcorder you decide and record the audio separately with a field recorder – like a Zoom H2 (that has manual audio gain control) and sync that with the video during editing (and mute the audio captured by the camcorder).

When the audio is too LOUD, it will be recorded very "muddy" in the camcorder – along with static (peaking). This cannot be fixed by editing. The mic gain control and audio level being recorded needs to be monitored so the levels are not killing the internal recording mechanism.

Review:
This camera can withstand a lot of abuse. I have accidentally dropped it on concrete and filmed in the rain for an hour without a cover, and it still keeps on trucking! Although, the rain did make it so the touch flip-screen only works in certain positions (usually tucked away and flipped out, as seen in the video). There are a few cracks even in the plastic, but that does not affect its performance. One thing that is rather frustrating with the HC1 model is that the DV tape ejects from the bottom, so it is difficult to do work with a tripod. Also, it is rather big compared to other models (note: the battery is after-stock). But other than that, it is a powerful and tough Sony camera.

My model number is DCR-TRV 830. I need to buy some accessories for this model. I was thinking of buying the following:
USB cable
CD-ROM (SPVD-004 USB Driver)
Head cleaner
Platten roller cleaner

How much would they all cost? Is this camera compatible with all Windows laptops? What is the head leaner and Platten roller cleaner for? Where can I buy this stuff in Bradenton,FL?

I already have the camcorder so don’t tell me to buy a camera instead.

You should be able to download the driver from the Sony support site for your particular camcorder model. The rest you should be able to get at your local Radio Shack for a very reasonable price. As far as compatibility goes, refer to the Sony support site. The USB cable will most likely be the most expensive item on your list. It should cost under $40.00.

Hi, I am an artist, painter. I am looking to buy a new camera to photograph artwork. I currently have a 5 year sony cybershot digital camera which has lived it’s life proudly. I do not know much about cameras and need help finding a new professional quality camera. I think I may be looking for a high resolution digital screen camera with zoom, like a Nikon, or Canon. I want to ask around before buying a camera to see what other artists are using and what has worked well.

What kind of camera do you have?

What would be a good quality type of camera, brand, and accessory to help me photograph artwork?
The artwork I am aiming to photograph range from 8"x10" to 6ft. x 8ft canvases.
I use acrylics finish with a matte varnish.
I work in the basement of my house so their is not that much light.

Stop, back up and take a deep breath…

First lets look at the lens you will need. It needs to be a flat field lens.
SO.. fixed focal length Macro such as the Macro Nikkor 60mm AF
No zoom. Then you need the best res body you can afford with the lens.
THEN I hope you have money left for the heavy duty tripod and the lights if you do not already have them.
Canon, Nikon are the only two brands I would look at in dig. format untill your ready to move up to larger format cost and even better res. images.

WOW…………..Fast service. Amazing stuff. This vid was edited on the new computer, used to take 1 hour to render 1 minute of video (slowed me down and the video did not play smooth) The new computer is more than 4X faster, easy to set up…
Cameras are amazing, the changes in just 2 years to the smaller HDR XR550 is phenomenal, and the big camera….it’s very BIG.
