Why is everyone comparing Nikon cameras to sony cameras?
Don’t they know Nikon is designing their sensor it’s only being made by Sony?
Why don’t they compare Hasselblad and Leica cameras to Kodak since Kodak is making sensors for them?
Edwin then why is the Pixel Density different Nikon D3X 2.8 MP/cm² and Sony A900 2.9 MP/cm²
Some people think Nikon supplies the designs, others think they only supply the specs, and some think that Sony and Nikon share intellectual property for the design and use the same sensors in their cameras. There are even those who concede that Nikon’s sensors look suspiciously like Sony’s but contend that the high quality of these Sony sensors is only achievable because Sony uses Nikon steppers in the manufacturing process! This thread contains all of these conspiracy theories: http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/readflat.asp?forum=1021&thread=30180275&page=1
Even the venerable Thom Hogan doesn’t know exactly what’s going on – specifically about the D3X / A900: http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/readflat.asp?forum=1021&message=30260555&q=sony+sensor+hogan&qf=m
Of course, there is more to image quality than tiny differences in the sensor, and there is more to a camera than tiny differences in image quality.
All I know is that in a year or two I’ll want to replace my Nikon D200, and with all of the collaborations and rivalries my (Nikon) options keep getting better. My only worry is if I should trade in my 17-55 for a 24-70 beforehand.

Aren’t Hassy’s medium format and Leica 35mm ?I’ve never heard of Nikon not making their own parts.
BTW, most pros use Nikons.

From what I’ve read the sensor Sony is using in their A900 full-frame camera is the same sensor Nikon is buying from Sony for the Nikon D3x.
That’s why people are calling the the D3x the "Nikon A900".
**** EDIT ****
The Nikon D3x is using a Sony sensor just like the one in the Sony A900. Its not overly difficult to compute a 0.1 difference in pixel density if you round down for the Sony figure or up for the Nikon figure. It all depends on who is doing the computing. Like an accountant told me years ago: "Figures lie and liars figure."
The phrase "… most pros use Nikon or Canon…" is wearing thin. I suppose pros using Hasselblad or Leica or Mamiya (645 or RB67) or Olympus or Pentax or Sony are just deluding themselves into thinking they are professional photographers? Since they aren’t using a Nikon or Canon that must be the case I suppose.

It is only the d3x and the a900 which are being compared. Show me that the a900 and the d3x bodies are different enough to warrant the $5000 price difference.
And I don’t see hasselblad and leica users dogging other brands all the time. Only Nikon and Canon users are consistently telling people only to go with Nikon or Canon.
I think you should go with the camera which best suits your needs.
But that’s me.
edit-Edwin, I know we got off on the wrong foot, but I really appreciate your answers on this one. Thanks for standing up for the little guy. It still amazes me that people run to get other Sony products like tvs and playstaions but disregard them as camera makers. After all, a camera, especially a digital one, is an electronic device. And I guess many of those pushing only canon and nikon as professional camera makers have never heard of hasselblad, mamiya or leica. Oh well, there is nothing you can do to change a closed mind.
